Los Angeles Mission College

Standard Four meeting

December 14, 1999

Minutes

Present: Doug McFerren, Benny Scott, Ruth Suyama, Margie Long, Sonia Soto-Bair, Alice Yee, John Cantley, Maury Pearl

Cantley described the matrix and cited its uses for developing a description of standard four. Maury Pearl introduced himself and discussed the assistance he can provide the committee with regard data and surveys.

The committee decided to go through the standard section by section.

A.1 Pearl and Scott will be responsible. The demographics book Pearl is developing answers 1 and Scott can survey the catalogue.

A. 2 and A.3Suyama and Oddino will interview the department chairs and lead instructors in the disciplines to determine if there is a consistent procedure for assuring that students can complete programs. They will look into what is done to help students if programs change or are eliminated. How do students cope with programs that do not offer all the courses? See petition process.

A. 4 Long and Chow will be responsible for looking into the effect of institutional support in personnel and other resources on programs. They will ask what is the procedure for allocating resources? Shari Borchetta and Dr. Castro will be interviewed.

A.5 Soto-Bair and Scott are responsible for investigating academic advising.

B.1 Scott is responsible for looking into the curriculum approval process for programs and the method used for assessing whether or not they support the mission statement.

B.2 McFerran will survey the degrees and certificates as to the integrity of the content and whether or not it matches the titles and objectives.

B.3 The committee discussed whether or not programs currently have learning outcomes stated and came to the conclusion that they do not. It was discussed that the new program review process will cause this to happen. Scott will work with Mark Pracher, head of program review, to describe this change.

B.4 General education as it is enmeshed in programs will be studied along with individual programs. McFerran will be responsible.

B.5 and B.6 District discipline competencies are assigned to Oddino. Technical and vocational competencies are established and assessed in vocational and and occupational programs by advisory committees. SCANS competencies apply here. Eloise Cantrell needs to be interviewed about this.

C.1, C.2 and C.3 are assigned to McFerran. A major question here is, are outcomes for general education stated at LAMC? Consensus was that they are not-at least not specifically. This would be a component of an "assessment of learning outcomes" effort at the college.

C.4 Oddino will be responsible for competencies as they relate to general education.

D.1 Mark Pracher will be asked to provide a description of the program review process. Program review is being integrated into the planning process as it is being revised currently. Mike Reynolds will be asked to contribute the Master Plan Committee's progress in this area.

D.2 Scott will provide a description of the coordination of programs both on and off campus as well as on line with regard to program review. Pracher will be interviewed.

D.3 Scott will pull statements from the catalogue and schedules as to the criteria for awarding grades and completion certificates.

D.4 Scott will provide a statement on the petitions process and Joanne Kalter-Flink will be interviewed as to the procedure for pass-along and articulation agreements. Carlos Nava will be interviewed as to the articulation process now in place.
