Los Angeles Mission College

Standard 5

December 14, 1999

Minutes

PRESENT: Mari Rettke, Bertha Villa for Nery Ocasio, Ron Portillo, Mark Pursley, Maury Pearl, Roman Juarez

Maury Pearl introduced himself as the new Associate Dean. He will be helping in the process of analyzing existing data and gathering new information for the accreditation. He proposed to review other colleges’ surveys as reference for our own surveys. He also encouraged members to think of questions that would let the college know what students know about gravience and procedures.

Committee went through standards sections 1 through 3 and resulted in the following:

Sub-section 1:

Function/activity

Publications – catalog, schedule, WEB, the application form itself, student handbook

Data sources

State and District policies
Campus mission statement

Questions

  • Do the admissions policies apply across the board – for example, what about the courses we offer at local high-schools – are our standard admission policies applied or are there special circumstances?
  • Who reviews the data sources and the publications to ensure accuracy and consistency?
  • Does the matriculation process deal with the admissions policies?
  • (If so where/when in the matriculation process is this information given?)
  • Do we distinguish between credit and non-credit programs?
  • Do we keep any information on who applies, who is rejected and why, and who is accepted? Is it appropriate to address this in this standard?

Sub-section 2:

Function/Activity

Publications – catalog, schedule, WEB, application form itself, student handbook

Data sources

State and District policies
Campus mission statement

Comments

  • The complaint and grievance procedures are posted outside Student Services and in the Admissions Office.
  • The complaint and grievance procedures are NOT included in either the catalog or schedule.
  • Suggestions
  • Update the WEB page to include this.
  • Include questions on the survey as to the level of awareness of a complaint and grievance procedure/policy.
  • Flex activity (to include all – students, faculty, staff) – orientation and information on the how and why of the complaint and grievance procedures.

Sub-section 3:

Function/activity

DSPSS, EOPS, Counseling, GAIN, ESL, CARE, Child Dev., PACE, ASO, Financial Aid, Veterans, Foreign Students, Articulation, and (possibly) Health Services

Resources

Program review from each of these areas

Questions

  • What methodology do each of these areas use to identify the needs of its student population and provide the appropriate services and programs to address those needs?
  • How do they determine staffing and assess the effectiveness of their programs?
  • What happens to those students who check off the "needs/am interested" boxes on the admissions forms? Do we follow up on this? How? Who?
  • Who determines what services we offer? District? State? Committee? Result of surveys?

The last seven of the sub-sections were distributed and committee members will respond to Carlos Nava on or before December 17th 1999.
