Los Angeles Mission College

Standard 6 meeting

Minutes

January 26, 2000

Present: Terry Carter, Robert Smazenka, Stan Levine, Ed. Casson, Dale Newman, Sandy Thomas, Eva Berend, David Garza, John Cantley, Roman Juarez, Maury Pearl.

John presented the self study procedures and commented on where standard six is in this procedure.

The committee reviewed work done at the January 6 worksop, work done by individual members, and added more questions to the matrix.

The committee discussed the differences in the new standards of this accreditation and delved into the issue of quantity of detail. Some of the sub-sections seem to be very ambiguous to some team members. There was also some discussion on how some work would overlap with other standards and how to avoid this overlap. It was agreed to bring these concerns to the steering committee.

It was explained to the committee how their questions will be answered by the district and board.

The committee asked if any other areas of the college accepted national standards similar to those followed by the library. Again, this will be asked at the steering committee meeting.

It was asked what is the status of information storage and retrieval technology at satellite locations such as the One Stop center. What do they do? Are these areas covered by the Standard?

Pearl encouraged members to submit questions for the upcoming survey, which will be administered sometime in March. Members should submit their questions by late February and early March at the latest.

There was discussion about the need for assessment of student computer literacy and the need to provide some sort of computer literacy instruction for all students.

The committee agreed to divide the standard into groups and assigned the sections to the different members as follows:

  1. Dale Newman, Susan Polk
  2. Robert Smazenka, Terry Carter, Claudio Ramirez
  3. David Garza, Ed Zayas
  4. Eva Berand, Robert Smazenka
  5. Eva Berand, Ed Casson
  6. Stan Levin, Ed Casson
  7. Sandy Thomsen, Dale Newman

The committee agreed to research college procedures, interview individuals, and read appropriate documentation to finish the matrix and turn in a rough draft of the descriptive narrative by the next meeting, which will be on Wednesday February 9 at 3:00 in the Learning Resource Center Conference Room.
