Los Angeles Mission College Standard Eight meeting December 9, 1999 Minutes Present: Maury Pearl, Yolanda Ramil, Roy Paulson, Sandra Hernandez, Leslie Foster, Victor Reynolds, Terry Bommer, Shari Borchetta, Aaron Schrier, John Cantley 1. Discussion on what defines physical resources. Members stated that they must consider our off-campus locations as well as the on-campus facilities. Shari brought up the assessment of adequacy of physical resources based on State guidelines--passive assessment. The campus development committee assesses the needs of the campus on a regular basis. Question: what does adequate mean, i.e: health and safety issues demand evidence that is quantified. Another way to ask this question is, are the facilities we have adequate for what we do in them? It was decided that the standard would have to include references to and supporting documents from the minutes of the Campus Development Committee. 2. The primary issue in the area of maintenance has been lack of staff. Questions came up on what determines adequacy of maintenance. Roy Paulson stated that there are guidelines that must be followed. These can be quantified as evidence. 3. Safety issues can be addressed partially in the minutes of the Work Environment Committee. The committee agreed that these minutes would also have to be offered to the commission as supporting documents. Both the minutes of the Campus Development Committee and the Work Environment Committee can be put on-line and read there. 4. The committee discussed the concept of systematic assessment of equipment needs and maintenance. Roy Paulson and Charles Perkins can describe the ongoing inventory procedures. Also the work environment committee is involved. Any staff and instructors who use equipment need to be interviewed. 5. Maury Pearl discussed planning and surveys--sample survey questions are available. The all-inclusive survey will occur in March. Planning for construction and equipment is an issue that is being studied in several committees. The committee asked how does the college determine whether or not the planning that is being done is effective? Assignments were made for each subsection: 1. Ramil and Risemberg; 2. Paulson and Bommer; 3. Reynolds and Foster; 4. Hernandez and Gorham; 5. Borchetta and Schrier. Adjournment
