My name is Janice Silver, and
I am the Vice-Chair of Child Development at L. A. Mission College. I have
been teaching here at Mission since 1984, first on a part time basis,
and then as a full time faculty member beginning in 1992.
These have been stimulating
and rewarding years as I have had the opportunity to participate in the
process that has seen our Child Development discipline grow and expand
into areas that reflect the needs of the community and the new directions
of our field.
My background includes my childhood,
early education, Bachelor's Degree, Graduate work, and first teaching
experiences in northern Saskatchewan, Canada where I lived until moving
to California in 1980. My Canadian ties are still strong and firm, and
I look forward to regular trips to Canada to connect with my family, my
friends, my heritage and my roots.
I have a firm belief that education
is a lifelong process, and I have been fortunate to be part of the educational
experience for all ages of learners, from very young children through
adulthood in a variety of settings. Each age brings its own joys and discoveries,
and it is a privilege to share the process at all stages. My own professional
development includes a Master's Degree in Human Development from Pacific
Oaks College in Pasadena, and continues through active involvement in
professional organizations, attendance at local, state and national conferences
and participation in a variety of workshops, grants and committees.
My professional life is balanced
and enhanced by a full and active family life. I am married and have two
teenage daughters who continue to bring "Child Development"
to life in my home as well as through my work!
I welcome communication through
phone calls, emails and personal appointments. Education is enriched through
dialogue and a shared experience!
