This course is a journey through space, exploring the galaxies, stars, and planets, with an eye to the origin and proliferation of life in the universe.

Economics
Economics 1 - Principles of Economics I
3 Units, (UC: CSU)

An introductory course in the principles of microeconomic theory, including economic analysis of the firm and resource allocation; analysis of the laws of supply and demand; market structures of the American economy; price theory; current domestic economic problems.
Prerequisites: English 28 or equivalent.

Economics 2 - Principles of Economics II
3 Units, (UC: CSU)
This is an introductory course in the principles of macroeconomics theory. Measurement of aggregate economic performance, including GDP and national income, money and banking business cycle, role of government and the Federal Reserve System (fiscal and monetary policies), economic growth and stability, international trade, and economics of under development are covered in this course.
Prerequisites: English 28 or equivalent.

English 101 - College Reading and Composition I

A course in reading and writing to improve the student’s skill in thinking clearly, reading carefully, and writing effectively; the organization and composition of expository material, including the research paper, are emphasized.
Prerequisites: English 28 with a grade of "C" or better, or appropriate score on College English Placement Exam.

English 102 - College Reading and Composition II

3 Units, (UC: CSU)
This course is designed to develop critical thinking, reading, and writing skills beyond the level of English 101. Students will develop critical thinking by writing strong arguments based on poetry, drama and faction, as subject matter. Students will learn to identify premises and conclusions and recognize patterns of faulty logic in developing arguments. They will learn to distinguish between deductive and inductive reasoning and will demonstrate this and utilizing research strategies.
Prerequisites: English 101 with a grade of "C" or better.

English 103 - COMPOSITION & CRITICAL THINKING

3 Units, (UC:CSU)

Develops critical thinking and writing skills and emphasizes logical reasoning, analysis, and strategies of argumentation using expository prose as subject matter. Designed to improve critical thinking in written arguments by applying established modes of reasoning, analyzing rhetorical strategies, evaluating logical fallacies, and detecting bias.

Prerequisites: English 101 with a grade of "C" or better.

Finance 8 - Personal Finance and Investments

Helps the individual manage, optimize and preserve personal income, expenditure and investments. Discussions will be focused on institutions that exist to serve the consumer. Attention will be given to family budgeting, consumer protection, buying on credit and borrowing money, home ownership and financing, different types of insurance, retirement planning and investments. With the number of personal bankruptcies now exceeding one million each year, and many students leaving college with enormously high credit card balances, Dollars & Sense meets a critical need in today's society.

This course offers a study of the tremendous variety of humans who occupy this planet Earth and their development of cultures, languages, economics, social and political systems, and their religions. Emphasis will be on the role of humans as they alter the face of the earth.

This course offers a study of the physical elements of the earth, with emphasis on the nature, distribution, and relationship of land forms, climate, soils, vegetation, and their integrated patterns of world distribution. An elementary course dealing with the earth's surface features and the geological laws governing their origin and development.

The development of man from Paleolithic times through the civilizations of the Ancient Middle East, Greece, Rome, the Middle Ages, Recnaissance and the emergence of nation states is emphasized.

A survey of political and social developments which shaped this nation from the Colonial era through the Civil War.

Mathematics 125 - Intermediate Algebra

5 Units, (CSU)
Topics include laws of exponents, radicals, equations in one variable (linear, quadratic, and some of higher degree), systems of linear equations, imaginary numbers, graphical representations, logarithms, binomial theorem.
Prerequisites: Mathematics 115 or appropriate score on Mathematics Placement Exam.

Mathematics 227 - Statistics

4 Units, (UC: CSU)

Includes the following topics: graphical techniques; probability and probability distributions;
sampling; estimation; correlations; regression; hypothesis testing; categorical data.
Emphasis is on data analysis and interpretation, using sample data to extrapolate                 
population characteristics.

Prerequisites: Math 125 or 123C with a grade of ‘C’ or better, or appropriate skill level
demonstrated through the Mathematics assessment process, or by permit

Oceanography
Oceanography 1 - Introduction to Oceanography
3 Units, (UC: CSU)
This course introduces the student to the field of Oceanography. Major topics to be studied include the formation and evolution of the sea floor, islands and coastlines, the chemical and physical properties of sea water, motions of the sea (waves, tides and currents) and marine life. Special reference will be made to Southern California and the problems of human uses of the sea.

Sociology 1 - Introduction to Sociology

Develops the sociological perspective that behavior is determined largely by human interactions and membership in groups. The main elements of sociological analysis are presented, emphasizing social organization, culture, socialization, social stratification, and population. These elements are applied to topics such as crime and delinquency.
