L.A. MISSION COLLEGE NAMED 2021 EQUITY CHAMPION OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN TRANSFER DEGREES FOR LATINOS

SYLMAR, CA — The Campaign for College Opportunity has named Los Angeles Mission College a 2021 Equity Champion of Higher Education for exemplary work in awarding Associate Degrees for Transfer (ADT) to Latino students, campus officials announced today.

Across all California Community Colleges, L.A. Mission College ensured that a high proportion of degree or transfer-seeking Latinos received an ADT during the 2019-20 academic year, according to the Campaign for College Opportunity.

“We are proud of the work we’re doing and the strategies we’ve developed to help Latinos achieve their dreams of graduating and transferring to four-year universities,” said L.A. Mission College Interim President Armida Ornelas. “It feels good to be recognized for our work, but more importantly, this is proof that if we dedicate time and energy toward helping our students succeed, these efforts will pay dividends.

“LAMC is helping Latinos in the community achieve their educational goals and we’re going to continue building on these successes.”

The Campaign for College Opportunity’s percentage point gap (PPG), which identifies campuses that are excelling in awarding ADTs to Latinos relative to campus ADT conferral rates, identified L.A. Mission College as acting with intentionality to ensure Latinos who have a transfer goal go on to earn an ADT.

L.A. Mission College awarded 428 ADTs during the 2019-20 academic year, up more than 21 percent compared to the previous year’s numbers.

“This is a tremendous achievement and the real work of equity,” wrote Michele Siqueiros, President of the Campaign for College Opportunity, in a message to Dr. Ornelas.

L.A. Mission College will be recognized at the virtual Champions of Higher Education Celebration on Tuesday, November 16 from 10 a.m.-11:30 a.m. on Zoom. More than 200 members of California’s higher ed community will be present.
