The award-winning screenplay writer, the Instagram influencer, and the captivating professor all have something in common: a mastery of words. English is about exploring the world’s most compelling ideas through reading, writing, speaking, and listening. This field will teach you to think critically, argue persuasively, and develop creativity.

Those who want to read and write at a high level must first practice concrete skills. Today’s employers are desperately seeking workers who can communicate clearly and understand complex ideas. Building literacy proficiency will help you shine when you interview for jobs, argue for a promotion, or pitch a million-dollar business idea.

Mastering English is more than just understanding what is inside a reader or writer’s toolkit, however. To write well, you must unleash your creativity. As a writer, you will take a blank screen and build compelling worlds using only your keyboard and your imagination. As you explore ideas, you will find the power of your own voice. You will also learn to listen to new perspectives, including those traditionally marginalized, which will broaden your understanding of the world.
Our English department offers a variety of courses for students hoping to transfer, complete an English degree, or enhance their reading and writing skills. These courses are offered on campus and online, in the morning, afternoon, and evening, and in accelerated formats. Our dedicated instructors will provide you with habits of thinking and writing that you can use for the rest of your life.
