What is AB705? What do I need to do?
You have the right to access transfer-level coursework in English, math, and credit English as a second language (ESL) at all California Community Colleges.
The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) is in the process of reforming how placement is determined in English and math courses. Pursuant to California Assembly Bill (AB) 705, which took effect January 1, 2018, all students have the right to access transfer-level coursework in English, math, and credit ESL. It requires that California community colleges use multiple methods of placing students into such courses, including the use of high school cumulative grade point average, high school course grades, and high school courses taken.
Automated Self-Reported Placement Process
If you earned a high school diploma, or the high school proficiency certificate or passed the General Educational Development
(GED) within the past ten years, you are eligible to be placed according to the new placement process.
Please follow the steps below to be re-evaluated:
- Log-on to your student portal at MyCollege.laccd.edu
- Click on the "More to-do list details" link under the To Do Checklist
- Click on the link that reads English and Math Placement questionnaire
- Click submit button when done
Please answer all questions that are preceded by an asterisk. When possible, but not necessary, please use your high school transcript to respond to the questions. The information provided will be used to determine your new placement for English and math.
Your placement results will be viewable on the student portal after 15 business days of submission of the questionnaire.
LAMC Math Placement Levels
There are two math tracks: SLAM and BSTEM
SLAM stands for Statistics and Liberal Arts Math.
BSTEM stands for Business, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
Combined Math Placement
Each LACCD college uses varied criteria. At LA Mission, students typically fall into two math tracks BSTEM or SLAM. Depending on the automated or guided-self placement outcomes, students may enroll in either track. It is advised that students who are unsure of their track meet with an academic counselor to discuss their math course selection to ensure the course is needed for the student to achieve their educational goal and /or major. The automated self-reported placement will provide both options to students in the PeopleSoft portal (BSTEM and SLAM).

Am I ready for the selected BSTEM course?
Use this link, http://www.lamission.edu/Mathematics-Department/Schedule.aspx, to identify the pre-knowledge necessary to be successful in mastering the content of the selected BSTEM course.
Students who are not able to provide enough information for automated placement, who have been away from high school for more than 10 years, or did not attend or graduate from a US high school or earn a GED or CA High School Proficiency certificate, may use the Guided Self- Placement process. This will likely involve meeting with a counselor or other college officer to discuss the following matrix.
