James Urbaniak is best known for his roles as Simon Grim in three Hal Hartley films: Henry Fool (1997), Fay Grim (2006) and Ned Rifle (2014), catoonist R. Crumb in American Splendor (2003), and Dr. Thaddeus "Rusty" Venture on the animated series The Venture Bros. (2003–2023), Grant Grunderschmidt on Review (2014–2017), and Arthur Tack on Difficult People (2015–2017). He has had recurring roles on The Morning ShowFor All MankindElementary, and The Office as Dwight Schrute’s best friend, Rolf.

He has had guest starring roles on dozens of major series, on everything from Better Call Saul toThe Wizards of Waverly Place. James has appeared in major motion pictures and independent films, directed by such luminaries as Patricia Arquette, Julie Taymor, Richard Linklater, Barry Levinson, George Clooney, Ang Lee, Bryan Singer, and Woody Allen. And in the past two years, he appeared in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and had a featured role in Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans.

In New York in the 1990s and 2000s, he was at the center of the Off- and Off-Off Broadway theatre world, winning a 1996 OBIE Award for Distinguished Performance for his performance in Richard Foreman’s The Universe, and international acclaim for his tour-de-force solo performance in Will Eno’s Thom Paine (Based on Nothing), for which he won the Best Actor Award at the 2004 Edinburgh Fringe and a 2005 Drama Desk award nomination.
