Celebrate Latino Heritage Month at LAMC
Starting in September, Los Angeles Mission College will celebrate Latino Heritage with a series of events celebrating the history, culture, and contributions that Latinos have made to society.
Zoot Suits: Riots, Fashion & Legacy:
Wednesday, September 20, 6–8 pm
Join our Chicano Studies Department as we reflect on the 80th anniversary of the Zoot Suit Riots. In this interactive Zoom session, we will examine the causes of the riots, discuss how a style of dress became the focal point of unrest, and cover the riots’ lasting cultural legacy.

Musical Identity in Mexican Heritage and Spanish Rock:
Wednesday, September 27, 6–8 pm
Chicano Studies will also host a deep dive into Rock en Español and Latin Alternative music, where we will examine the role of rock music as a form of cultural and political identity. Joining us will be UC Riverside professor Jorge N. Leal Ph.D., and KCSN 88.5 FM musical curator Byron Gonzalez.

Latino Heritage Celebration:
Tuesday, October 3, 10 am–6 pm
Join us for an all-day Latino Heritage Celebration in the Quad, featuring Rock en Español from the 80s through 90s in the morning, with Mariachi, paletas, hot chocolate, and café’ throughout the afternoon.
We will be capping off the event with a screening of the Pixar film Coco, followed by a Q&A from 3–6 pm in Campus Center Main.
