CARE

COOPERATIVE AGENCIES RESOURCES FOR EDUCATION (CARE)

The CARE program was established by the State of California to help welfare recipients become convinced that they and their children are important, that they are capable, and that with proper support they can break the welfare dependency cycle through education and job training. CARE is a supplemental component of EOPS that specify assists EOPS students, who are single heads of welfare households with young children, by offering supportive services so they are able to acquire the education, training and marketable skills needed to transition from welfare-dependency to employment and eventual self-sufficiency for their families. Every CARE student is an EOPS student who must meet the eligibility criteria for both programs.

What are CARE Eligibility Requirements?

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Student receiving CalWORKs/TANF cash aid for themselves and/or for their child(ren) at the time of application for the CARE program.
  • Be single, head of household.
  • An eligible full-time EOPS student.
  • Be a parent or legal guardian of at least one dependent child.
  • In order to be eligible for CARE, you must also be eligible for EOPS.

What are CARE Services?

  • Educational planning and vocational assessment
  • Cash grants for education-related expenses
  • School supplies including notebooks, paper, backpacks, and calculators
  • Special counseling and advisement
  • Meal tickets
  • EOPS/CARE community assistance including networking, family activities, and support groups
  • Referrals to campus and community-based service programs
  • Celebratory events for parents and children
  • Textbook assistance
