Global Languages

The Associate in Arts in Spanish for Transfer prepares students to transfer into the CSU system. Students completing the Associate in Arts in Spanish for Transfer are introduced to the language, history, culture and literature of the Spanish-speaking world through coursework and language laboratory assignments. This curriculum is designed to prepare native and near native speakers of Spanish as well as those students studying Spanish as a foreign language to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish. Students will have the opportunity to develop proficiency in understanding, speaking, reading and writing Spanish and to acquaint themselves with Hispanic cultures and civilization.
Students acquire basic skills through listening, speaking, reading, writing, and cultural components of the curriculum to carry on a basic conversation. Students will be prepared for transfer into a baccalaureate degree program in Spanish or a similar major at a CSU.

The goal of the Associate in Arts in Spanish for Transfer Degree (AA-T in Spanish) is to develop competence in the ability to understand, speak, read, and write Spanish, and to provide an understanding and appreciation of the Spanish language and the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world, including the US Latino experience. The Associate in Arts in Spanish for Transfer Degree (AA-T in Spanish) prepares students to continue their education at a California State University campus leading to a baccalaureate degree. Students who complete this degree may enter with junior status to the California State University system and will be given priority admission to the CSU system.

A student receiving a degree in this field will be able to:

  • Demonstrate language proficiency by writing and speaking Spanish at a beginning to intermediate level.
  • Interpret written and spoken messages in Spanish at a beginning to intermediate level.
  • Demonstrate appropriate knowledge of the Spanish-speaking world regarding social interactions, beliefs, values, arts, literature, music, and geography.
  • Apply their knowledge of Spanish language and culture beyond the classroom in interactions within multicultural communities and the world.

If you speak Spanish at home or have lived abroad and learned to speak Spanish without having formal instruction in the language, Spanish035, 036, and 037 are probably the classes for you.
Often heritage speakers enroll in the most basic levels of Spanish (Spanish 001 and 002) because they haven’t had formal training in Spanish. However, given that they know how to speak Spanish, the needs are very different from someone who is starting to learn a language for the first time. Spanish for native speakers is not about just grammar rules, or vocabulary. The native or heritage speaker needs to bring out what they already know and evaluate it, enhance it and standardize it thru a different pedagogical process.

The native speaker’s program is designed to help you to apply your Spanish skills in reading and writing – to put you on the road to becoming bilingual. If it is your intention to transfer to a university or become a professional translator or interpreter, these courses will help you develop your reading and writing skills, giving you a competitive edge in the field.

Spanish Placement Exam and Pre-Requisite/Co-Requisite Challenge
If you are a native speaker or heritage speaker in Spanish 001 you will be bored and disengaged. This can lead you to feel extremely frustrated. Take the placement exam and find out which Spanish class is right for you.

If you took the pre-requisite level in a different institution, or acquired linguistic skills in another context (traveling, living with native speakers, etc.) or you think you do not need the pre-requisite, please jump to “complete the form Petition for Pre-Requisite/Co-Requisite Challenge” at the bottom of this page.

Be wise with your decision. You may assume you are ready for a higher class and you may not be ready. This will not only be a disadvantage for you but also a disruption for the non-natives taking the class. We highly recommend you to take placement exam.
