Biotechnology - What is biotechnology? The Biotechnology Innovation Organization, or BIO, states that "biotechnology harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products that help improve our lives and the health of our planet." Using this definition, applications for biotechnology are broad from agriculture to medicine, energy production, chemical processing, industrial manufacturing, and bioremediation (or environmental clean-up).

Computer Science at Los Angeles Mission College is evolving to keep in pace with the technological standards. We are proud to offer programs for newly emerging technical jobs!
We offer Certificate of Achievements in Computer Programming, Cyber Security, Full Stack (Web Application) Development, Cloud Computing, Data Analyst, and Data Scientist. These certificates are ideal for professionals applying for technology jobs. Students may apply for internships, interview for entry-level IT positions, or advance towards earning an Associate, once they earn the certificate of achievement.
For high school graduates, we are working with high schools to create pathways to certificates and associate degrees.
Students in our program can take advantage of other events and activities where they acquire hands-on experience. We have a fully equipped lab for the Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC), which our new club, Mission X, will participate in. The well-established Robotecas club offers a unique service to our community by providing hardware and software solutions for personal computers in our neighboring area.
Engineering discipline at Los Angeles Mission College offers specialized tracks in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Computer Software Engineering, each designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed for thriving careers in the ever-evolving field of engineering.

Mathematics Department at Los Angeles Mission College offers the dual advantage of small classes and knowledgeable faculty dedicated to teaching and exploring mathematics and its applications. Our instructors provide students with a learning experience that utilizes lecture methods, collaborative learning, and integrated computer work.

Los Angeles Mission College does not offer an Associate’s Degree in Nursing. However, students may meet requirements with an Associate’s Degree in Health Science.
Registered nurses (RNs) provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members.

Los Angeles Mission College does not offer a Pre-Med Program. However, students may meet requirements with an Associate’s Degree for Transfer in Biology. Typically, students will pursue a bachelor’s degree in a related area and continue in a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). Students are able to major in any degree to attend medical school. Please consult with a counselor for more information.
Physicians and surgeons diagnose and treat injuries or illnesses. Physicians examine patients; take medical histories; prescribe medications; and order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests. They counsel patients on diet, hygiene, and preventive healthcare. Surgeons operate on patients to treat injuries, such as broken bones; diseases, such as cancerous tumors; and deformities, such as cleft palates.

To be most competitive, most students will obtain a Bachelor’s degree and continue on in a Master’s in Physician Assistant program. Please consult with a counselor for more information.
Physician assistants, also known as PAs, practice medicine on teams with physicians, surgeons, and other healthcare workers. They examine, diagnose, and treat patients under the supervision of a physician.
Los Angeles Mission College does not offer a Pre-OT Program. However, students may meet requirements with an Associate’s degree in Health Science. Typically, students will pursue a Bachelor’s degree in a related area and continue on to a Master’s or Doctorate program in Occupational Therapy. Please consult with a counselor for more information.
Occupational therapists treat injured, ill, or disabled patients through the therapeutic use of everyday activities. They help these patients develop, recover, improve, as well as maintain the skills needed for daily living and working. OTs can work in a variety of settings including schools, hospitals, clinics, or nursing facilities.

Los Angeles Mission College does not offer a Physical Therapy program. However, students may meet requirements with an Associate’s Degree in Health Science or Kinesiology. Typically, students will pursue a bachelor’s degree in a related field and continue in a Doctor of Physical Therapy program. Please consult with a counselor for more information.
DPT programs typically last 3 years. Physical therapy programs typically require a bachelor's degree, which may be in recreation and fitness or healthcare and related fields, and prerequisite courses such as anatomy, chemistry, and physics. Most DPT programs require candidates to apply through the Physical Therapist Centralized Application Service (PTCAS). These programs often include courses in biomechanics, neuroscience, and pharmacology. Physical therapist students also complete clinical work, during which they gain supervised experience in areas such as acute care and orthopedic care.
Physical therapists, sometimes called PTs, care for people of all ages who have functional problems resulting from back and neck injuries; sprains, strains, and fractures; arthritis; amputations; neurological disorders, such as stroke or cerebral palsy; injuries related to work and sports; and other conditions. Physical therapists use a variety of techniques to care for their patients. These techniques include exercises; training in functional movement, which may include the use of equipment such as canes, crutches, wheelchairs, and walkers; and special movements of joints, muscles, and other soft tissue to improve mobility and decrease pain.
Duties and Responsibilities

Review patients’ medical history and referrals or notes from doctors, surgeons, or other healthcare workers

Diagnose patients’ functions and movements by observing them stand or walk and by listening to their concerns

Develop individualized plans of care for patients, outlining the patients’ goals and the expected outcomes of the plans

Use exercises, stretching maneuvers, hands-on therapy, and equipment to ease patients’ pain, help them increase their mobility, prevent further pain or injury, and facilitate health and wellness

Evaluate and record a patients’ progress, modifying the plan of care and trying new treatments as needed
-
Educate patients and their families about what to expect from the recovery process and how to cope with challenges throughout the process
